So we’ve been in a wee bit of a dog fight with the classic rock guys since we fired up this pig back in October. I’m cool with it, competition is good, the winners end up being the listeners because there’s more choice out there. I’m not a strictly “modern rock” snob, I do have some love for the classics, but the thing is about the classics is that they’ve been played over and over and over and over again. I love being at LIVE 105 because we’re constantly busting out the new shit, mixed in with some awesome essentials. I know some people have a preference, they’re either on the modern side of things, or on the classic side of things. But before you make that final choice, think about this. If you’re a fan of modern rock, chances are you’ll NEVER see something like this on youtube:
Foo Fighters are getting set to release one of the most anticipated rock albums of 2011, Wasting Light drops April 12th. LIVE 105 was the first station in Halifax to play the 1st single, Rope. It’s a sh*tkicker of a choon. The Foo’s just so happen to be the band that we want to send YOU to see on Live Adventure #2!! Here’s what you need to know, starting this Monday morning, listen to the Morning Mob with Floyd & I, 5:30am to 10am. Listen for the Foo to call. We’ll give you two chances to qualify as you get up and get ready for the day. Here’s the coolest thing about it, WE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO SEE THEM!!! True story! You could win airfare, hotel accommodation and two tickets to the first stop on the Foo Fighters canadian tour!It could be Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary but I’m sorry, they will NOT be making a stop in Truro, or Moncton either, so Moncton, you can suck it.
Oh! Dave Grohl says there’s not a single ballad to be found on Wasting Light, damn skippy!
Live Adventure #2, this Monday with the Morning Mob, learn it, know it, live it.
Here’s some new Foos from the Shockwave NME awards in the UK recently:
Believe it or not, it’s never easy meeting your heroes. Have you ever had the chance to meet someone you idolized? Maybe not to hang out and watch Grey’s Anatomy with, but to talk to them about things other than themselves? Something that you really care about and are passionate about? How’d that turn out for you? Some might say it’s never a good idea to meet your heroes. Especially in rock and roll.
I’ve seen grown men turn into 14 year old girls when waiting in line to meet Ozzy. I’ve also seen 45 year old ladies lose their shizz when they met Jon Bon Jovi for crying out loud!! Sometimes the smartest, classiest guys and gals turn into drooling idiots in front of a rock star. That’s why none of my heroes or idols are rock stars. That’s not to say I don’t have my share of super fan moments. Ask me about any of the times I’ve seen Eagles of Death Metal or Queens of the Stone Age or the very first time I met Gord Downie from the Hip in person.
Today Floyd and I had the chance to talk to one of the most respected voices in music today, Alan Cross. A man both Floyd and I are HUGE fans of! We’re so proud to be able to broadcast Alan’s Ongoing History of New Music every Saturday morning on LIVE. And to be honest, during the interview, I was kind of in awe of someone for the first time in my career.
I have no idea how long he was on, what language I was speaking or if it made sense at all. I’m seriously going to have to go back and listen to it again, no joke! I hope you guys dug it, it was great to share that moment with the LIVE listeners. That was really cool…
Of course, everyone’s talking about tonight’s headliners, RUSH on the main stage at Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. But they don’t play until 8pm. I love this scene from I Love You, Man. Excuse the quality, some arsehole disabled the embedding code:
There’s a whole world open to you today at bluesfest. Couple of things I’ve noticed so far at this years edition.
1- People with backpacks. I know you need them to carry your “stuff” but if you are trying to make your way closer to a stage in the middle of 30 000 people, REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY CARRYING ONE!! I can’t tell you how many times I got nearly K.O’d by some Justin Beiber looking clone not minding where they’re going.
2- Elbows IN! There were moments during Metric that I honestly felt as if I were in a hockey game from the 1970’s. People walking by, looking down at their cell phones, slamming into people with their elbows.
3- If you feel the need to get into an argument with someone over $40. Don’t due it while in the middle of 30 000 people!!! You are upsetting the vibe of the crowd. Yes, I’m talking about you, steroid juice head with the cheap sunglasses and tight red t-shirt. NO ONE CARES how bad ass you think you are. We came to party, not deal with your misguided “Jersey Shore” need to look tough.
4-Bring sunblock and cash, lots of cash. The lineups for the ATM’s can get pretty thick. You can miss your favorite act while waiting for money. Head indoors to the Canadian War Museum, they have an ATM in there, it’s never busy and best of all, it’s air condidtioned!
Today’s Best Bets:
St. Joe’s Mission (formerly known as DonkeyPunch) 2pm Claridge Homes Stage
The Bush Pilots 3pm Black Sheep Tent
Graham Greer (Formerly of the Barstool Prophets) 5pm Claridge Homes Stage
Perfect night for Bluesfest. Really looking forward to seeing Metric. I saw them for the first time at the Capital Music Hall opening for The Killers. At the time, they were this ferocious act that demanded every single second of your attention. Frontwoman Emily Haines seemed to dare anyone in the audience to try and knock her off her perch. At one point stopping the show to verbally scap with some meathead in the crowd.
Metric are still as ferocious and it seems, even hungrier than ever. The live shows keep getting better and better and this year, they’ve earned a shot at the main stage @ Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. If you only make it to one show this year, make it this one. Come get your fill of Stadium Love.
Also, don’t miss Grevious Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons. A film playing in the Barney Danson Theatre. A look at the founding member of the Byrds as well as the Flying Burrito Brothers. The story is true rock & roll legend.
We are less than 48 hours away from the kickoff to one of the best music festivals in North America, Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest!! Tent city at Lebreton Flats went up earlier this week, the final touches are being made on all the stages, it is TIME! Bluesfest has opened with some pretty big names like Van Morrison, Jeff Beck and the Tragically Hip. But it’s never opened with so much METAL!! Maiden, OUTDOORS this Tuesday night!! For those not in the know, Iron Maiden rule. Here’s a primer, it’s about 7 minutes long, but well worth it:
Maiden hit the MBNA stage at 9pm July 6th. Make sure to get there early and catch my buddy’s in Loudlove, one of the BEST bands around, never mind Ottawa. They play the Claridge Homes Stage @ 8pm. It’s always a party with LL:
Looking forward to hitting New York City for the first time next week. In between the typical touristy places to check out, both Mrs. Carson and I are jacked up to visit the site of the birthplace of North American Punk Rock, CBGB‘s.
CBGB & OMFUG stands for Country, Bluegrass, Blues & Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers. WTF is a gormandizer you say? It’s someone with a voracious appetite, like this person:
or this person:
CBGB’s gave birth to the Talking Heads, Television (the band, not the thing you watch Big Bang Theory on), Blondie and of course, the architects of punk, right alongside the New York Dolls, The Ramones:
The club closed in October of 2006, now the place belongs to fashion designer John Varvatos.
I’m still gonna take a picture of the place, I don’t care what John and his $700 jeans think. Gabba gabba hey.
This weekends weather, sunny, highs around 25, got me thinking about my FAVORITE summer activity, Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest! I’ve been going to/working at Bluesfest for about 8 years now and seen some AMAZING acts. What will the lineup be like for this year? We should find out soon enough, but I’d like to make a few suggestions.
EAGLES OF DEATH METAL
Alright, I admit it, I’m biased. But I LOVE this band, I’ve partied with them, seen them three times in one year and I even have their second album title tattooed on my left arm. But if you saw their show at the Capital Music Hall July 31st 2009, you know what I’m talking about…
M.I.A
Admit it, you LOVED Paper Planes when you saw Pineapple Express! This lady is hands down, the shit.
So I’ve pulled two shifts already at my new on air home, 93.9 BOB-FM and I gotta say, I’m really digging the music!! Some of it I’ve never heard of before, or have never played before, but after Sunday’s show, I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT I GET TO PLAY NEXT! One of the highlights this weekend was getting to play New Order’s Blue Monday, one of my favorite tunes of all time! For those not in the know, New Order rose from the ashes of Joy Division. But let’s get a little deeper into that shall we?
For an almost complete look at the Madchester scene that came out of Manchester, England in the late 70′s, check out the AWESOME movie 24 Hour Party People:
Joy Division were about to embark on their first North American tour until singer Ian Curtis took his own life, literally the day before they were set to leave. After some time off, the remaining members formed New Order which brings us to the story behind one of my favorite songs of all time. Blue Monday. It was the first song to blend Kraftwerk, Madchester and New York City club music into one. Blue Monday went on to become the biggest selling 12 inch single in history. Thing is, Factory records never made a penny off of it. Because the sleeve design for the single, created by Factory’s Peter Saville cost TWICE as much to make as the actual record! So Factory actually LOST money on the best selling 12 inch single of all time.
Sorry to dash any dreams anyone might have had for a follow up to his paper selling album “The Return of Bruno”, no Bruce Willis hooks up with The Gorillaz in the video for the awesome new track, “Stylo”. Great driving song! Check it out:

HOCKEY is back brothers and sisters!! You know you’re a fan if you actually sat down to watch Thursdays NHL kickoff in Finland between Carolina and Minnesota. I always love this time of year, mostly because Leaf fans are so cute when they try to tell you how this year is the year for them. [...]

If so, I don’t think this man should be asked to provide the narration. But I can see why Robert Munsch was sooooo animated while reading! Robert Munsch See what I mean?
Who knew that I would have so much free time on my hands? I’ve settled in nicely into my role as house husband. Light ironing chores, running errands, allowing my wife the opportunity to NOT use OC Transpo: My favorite role as house husband would be cooking. Not fancy tea parties and crap like that, [...]
I grew up as a fan of les Glorieux in my hometown of Aylmer, Quebec. To be honest, I didn’t know a single person who cheered for anybody else. I refuse to acknowledge certain members of my family who may or may not cheer for a random group of clowns called the Maple Leafs: I’ll [...]
